Lifeguard Training with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
The Purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illness until emergency medical services personnel take over.
This course includes the following certifications: American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/ First Aid/ CPR/AED (valid for 2 years). A rescue mask will be provided as part of the course fee. Participants will need to obtain a current copy of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Manual by emailing jessiecharlton@kingsporttn.gov. This course includes approximately 19.5 hours of in-person instruction and 7 hours online.

To participate in the course you must meet the following prerequisites:
- Must be 15 years old by the last day of class
- Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing (swimming with face in the water). Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
- Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits.
- Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards with face in or out of water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
- Surface dive, feet first or head first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object while keeping your face at or near the surface so that you are able to get a breath. Candidate should not swim the distance underwater. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
The practice sessions will require some strenuous physical activity. American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Courses
Lifeguard Training with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (Recertification)
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training recertification course is to provide currently certified lifeguards the ability to review the Lifeguard Training course content in a formal course setting and renew their certification for another two (2) years.
This course is available for currently certified Lifeguards and will renew the following certifications: American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/ First Aid/ CPR/AED (valid for 2 years). A rescue mask is needed and can be purchased for an additional $10. Participants can obtain a current copy of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Manual by emailing jessiecharlton@kingsporttn.gov. This course is approximately 6 hours in length, and contains practice sessions, scenarios, and final written exams.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Training
Lifeguard Instructor Training
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants’ progress.
This course is designed to teach you how to teach and lead an American Red Cross Lifeguard Course. It is dedicated to developing the knowledge and skills you will need to plan and teach courses in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Program.
This course includes the following certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification (valid for 2 years). Course fee includes a current copy of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Manual. This course is approximately 25 hours in length.

To participate in the course you must meet the following prerequisites:
- Must be 17 years old by the last day of class.
- Possesses a current basic level certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/AED.
- Has successfully completed the online Introduction to the lifeguarding Instructor Course prior to the pre-course skills session.
- Has obtained all instructor and participant materials before entering the first session of the instructor course.
- Has successfully completed the pre-course skills session.
The pre-course skills session is designed to evaluate instructor candidates’ lifeguarding, CPR, and AED skills. Instructor candidates must successfully demonstrate competency in the pre-course skills session. Instructor candidates who do not demonstrate competency in the pre-course skill session prior to the start of the course cannot continue in the Lifeguarding Instructor Course.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Training
Lifeguard Instructor Training Review
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Review course is to review course material with instructors.
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor/Instructor Trainer review course is an abbreviated recertification course for currently certified (or expired no more than 1 year) instructors and instructor trainers. The purpose of the course is to allow participants to review the course content and practice skills in a formal class setting and complete the final written exam to earn certification.
This course includes the following certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification (valid for 2 years). Course fee includes a current copy of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Manual. This course is approximately 7.5 hours in length.

The pre-course skills session is designed to evaluate instructor candidates’ lifeguarding, CPR, and AED skills. Instructor candidates must successfully demonstrate competency in the recourse skills session. Instructor candidates who do not demonstrate competency in the review skill session will not pass the review course.

American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Courses
The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program helps participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. The courses in this program teach the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed.
This program offers a choice of first aid, CPR and AED courses to meet the various training needs of a diverse audience and is offered in traditional classroom format.

The First Aid/CPR/AED program includes the following modules, any of which can be combined to form a course:
- First Aid
- CPR (Adult/Child/Infant)
- AED (Adult/Child/Infant)
Certificate Issued and Validity Period
All First Aid/CPR/AED certifications are valid for 2 years from the date of course completion. On successful completion of a course in the First Aid/CPR/AED program, participants receive American Red Cross certification specific to the course they completed.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course
The Purpose of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants’ progress.
This course is not designed to teach you basic-level swimming skills. It is dedicated to developing the knowledge and skills you will need to plan and teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program.
This course includes the following certifications: American Red Cross Health and Safety Services Instructor Certificate for Water Safety (valid for 2 years). Course fee includes a current copy of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Manual, American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety manual, and Water Safety Handbook. This course is approximately 30 hours in length (6 hours online).

- Must be 16 years old by the last day of class.
- Swim the following strokes consistent with the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4 Stroke Performance Criteria:
- Front Crawl – 25 yds
- Back Crawl – 25 yds
- Breaststroke – 25 yds
- Elementary Backstroke – 25 yds
- Sidestroke – 25 yds
- Butterfly – 15 yds
- Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).
- Tread water for 1 minute.
